Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Global energy systems are at a key moment of revolution as the world transitions from fossil-based resources to renewable and sustainable energy pathways. This Special Issue, ‘Application and Conversion of Renewable Energy Towards Sustainable and Integrated Energy Systems’, aims to advance scientific, technological, and socio-economic understanding of renewable energy conversion processes, their practical applications, and their integration into sustainable development strategies. The Issue will provide a multidisciplinary platform for researchers, policymakers, and industry leaders to present state-of-the-art findings, methodologies, and best practices in this rapidly evolving field.

Focus of the Special Issue

The primary focus of this Issue is on innovative and sustainable approaches to the conversion, utilization, and management of renewable energy resources such as solar, wind, biomass, hydropower, geothermal, and ocean energy. Emphasis will be placed on the following:

Sustainable conversion technologies, including thermochemical, electrochemical, and biological routes.

Integration of renewable energy into existing and emerging energy systems (e.g., smart grids, hybrid energy systems, energy storage).

Socio-economic and environmental assessment, including life cycle analysis, techno-economic modeling, and policy frameworks.

Cross-disciplinary solutions that bridge engineering, environmental science, economics, and policy to achieve measurable sustainability outcomes.

Scope and Purpose

The scope of this Special Issue extends across fundamental research, applied studies, and demonstration projects. It invites contributions on the following:

Novel conversion and utilization processes for renewable energy resources.

Emerging materials and technologies enhancing energy efficiency.

Decarbonization strategies and their role in achieving net-zero goals.

Energy transition models that address environmental and social justice concerns.

Policy innovations and regulatory frameworks supporting renewable deployment.

This Special Issue aligns directly with the journal’s mission to address sustainability challenges through interdisciplinary approaches. It focuses on measuring and monitoring sustainability, developing actionable tools and indicators, and integrating socio-economic and environmental perspectives into energy system design. By combining technological innovation with sustainability assessment, this Issue aims to contribute to global goals such as the United Nations Climate Change Conference targets and United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (particularly SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy, and SDG 13: Climate Action).

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
