Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The development of sustainable transport is extensively researched and constitutes a core element of urban mobility plans. However, the theoretical assumptions of these strategic documents are often not fully reflected in empirical research. There remains a significant lack of well-established methodologies at the intersection of spatial analysis and traffic engineering that can precisely model development scenarios and provide actionable decision support for policymakers. Crucially, mobility choices are among the principal determinants of energy demand in urban systems, yet the energy dimension is rarely integrated into spatial planning tools in an explicit, quantifiable manner.

This Special Issue focuses on innovative solutions regarding the application of spatial analysis in mobility planning, with a strong emphasis on energy conservation and optimization. Within the scope of this SI, the concept of "energy" is defined comprehensively; it encompasses the energy expenditure associated with active mobility (walking and cycling) as well as the energy consumption of private vehicles and public transport systems. In particular, we welcome contributions that quantify the energy and CO₂ implications of alternative spatial and modal-split scenarios, and that link accessibility patterns to measurable reductions in transport energy use.

We invite submissions addressing, but not limited to, the following topics:

  • Spatial modelling of transport energy demand and energy-efficient accessibility analysis (e.g., the 15-minute city and X-minute city paradigms);
  • GIS-based methods and spatial decision support systems for estimating and reducing energy consumption in mobility;
  • Energy efficiency of modal shift toward active mobility and public transport, including well-to-wheel and life-cycle perspectives;
  • Energy consumption in urban logistics and last-mile delivery (e.g., parcel-locker vs. door-to-door scenarios);
  • Electrification of transport, charging-infrastructure siting, and the integration of transport energy demand with urban energy systems;
  • Assessment of low-emission and energy-saving mobility policies within Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMPs);
  • Data-driven scenario modeling connecting land use, travel behavior, and transport energy performance.

We highly encourage researchers and practitioners to submit their original scientific articles and contribute to the advancement of this field.

Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
