Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The proposed Special Issue focuses on the economic and financial aspects of sustainable mobility and public transportation systems, with a particular emphasis on public systems and transportation infrastructure that serve communities and regions. While the technological and environmental aspects of sustainable transportation systems have received much attention in the literature, the financial viability of these systems remains an underexplored area. This proposed Special Issue hopes to bridge this gap by evaluating the role of innovative financing mechanisms and economic policies in the development of sustainable public transportation systems.

This includes, but is not limited to, public–private partnerships, green bonds and sustainable finance mechanisms, pricing strategies, subsidy policies, and risk management in sustainable transportation infrastructure development projects, as well as the evaluation of the role of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) factors and climate finance in the development of sustainable public transportation systems.

This proposed Special Issue aims to add to the existing literature in Sustainability by incorporating the importance of financial sustainability as one of the pillars of sustainable public transportation systems. It also hopes to provide insights into bridging the gap between environmental sustainability and economic viability in publicly accessible mobility networks.

We welcome contributions addressing (but not limited to) the following topics:

  1. Public–private partnership (PPP) models for financing sustainable transit and mobility infrastructure.
  2. Sustainable finance instruments in funding urban public transportation projects.
  3. Fare pricing and subsidy strategies for promoting equitable and financially sustainable public transport.
  4. ESG integration in public transportation investment decisions.
  5. Cost–benefit analysis of sustainable public mobility transitions.
  6. Financial resilience and revenue diversification for public transport.
  7. Comparative studies of financing models across various regions, transit modes, and governance structures.
