Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The rapid urbanization of modern societies has necessitated the development of innovative technologies for enhancing cities' efficiency, sustainability, and livability. Smart cities integrate advanced digital solutions, including the Internet of Things (IoT), edge computing, and big data analytics, in order to optimize urban services and infrastructure. Machine learning plays a crucial role in this transformation by enabling intelligent decision-making in areas such as traffic management, energy efficiency, environmental monitoring, and public safety.

This Special Issue aims to explore novel machine learning methodologies and their applications in smart cities, fostering interdisciplinary research that bridges the gap between artificial intelligence, urban planning, and digital governance. By leveraging predictive analytics, reinforcement learning, and federated learning, researchers can contribute to building adaptive and resilient urban ecosystems that improve citizens' quality of life.

This Special Issue invites original research and review articles focusing on innovative machine learning applications in smart cities. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following: real-time traffic prediction and optimization; intelligent transportation systems; demand-responsive energy management; AI-driven public safety and security; urban mobility analytics; and sustainable urban development. Furthermore, contributions addressing ethical, privacy, and security challenges of deploying AI in urban environments are highly encouraged. By bringing together cutting-edge research and practical implementations, this Special Issue seeks to comprehensively understand how machine learning can revolutionize urban ecosystems, making cities more inclusive, efficient, and environmentally friendly.

I look forward to your submissions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Smart Cities is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2000 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
