Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Recent advances in artificial intelligence and sensing technologies have accelerated the evolution of vision sensors from traditional image acquisition devices toward intelligent sensing systems. By integrating machine learning with advanced sensing mechanisms, modern vision sensors can not only capture visual signals but also enhance, interpret, and adapt sensing capabilities according to different tasks and environments. This emerging paradigm enables sensors to move beyond passive data acquisition toward intelligent and task-oriented perception, where learning algorithms jointly improve sensing quality, information extraction, and environmental understanding.
This Special Issue aims to collect original research and review articles on recent advances in machine learning-enhanced vision sensors, including novel sensing technologies, intelligent algorithms, and emerging applications. We welcome contributions focusing on advanced vision sensing paradigms, such as dual-pixel and phase-based sensors, event cameras, neuromorphic vision sensors, computational imaging systems, depth sensors, and multimodal sensing platforms. In addition, learning-based approaches for sensor enhancement, image and signal reconstruction, sensor fusion, calibration, and intelligent perception are highly encouraged.
The Special Issue further highlights the integration of advanced sensors with artificial intelligence for emerging applications, including 3D perception, autonomous systems, robotics, embodied intelligence, and smart environments. By bridging sensor design, computational imaging, and machine learning, this Special Issue seeks to promote new methodologies and technologies toward adaptive, efficient, and intelligent vision sensing systems.
Potential topics include but are not limited to:
- Machine learning-enhanced vision sensors and intelligent sensing systems;
- Dual-pixel sensors, phase-based imaging, and aperture-based sensing;
- Event cameras and neuromorphic vision sensors;
- Computational imaging and physics-informed sensing;
- Depth sensing, stereo vision, RGB-D sensing, and LiDAR-assisted vision;
- Multimodal vision sensing and sensor fusion;
- Image restoration and enhancement for advanced vision sensors;
- Sensor calibration, modeling, and self-supervised sensor learning;
- Large vision models and foundation models for sensor-aware intelligent perception;
- Vision sensors for autonomous driving, robotics, and embodied intelligence;
- Applications of intelligent vision sensors in healthcare, industry, and smart environments;
- Resource-efficient AI and edge computing for intelligent vision sensors.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sensors is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
