Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Environmental monitoring is becoming more important as pressures on soil, water, and air quality increase due to climate change, agricultural intensification, and urban and industrial activity. Reliable information on environmental conditions is needed to manage resources, limit pollution, and support sustainable practices. Conventional laboratory analyses provide accurate data but are often slow and offer limited spatial and temporal resolution. This makes them less suitable for monitoring dynamic processes such as nutrient runoff, contaminant transport, or short-term pollution events.

Recent advances in sensor technologies offer alternative approaches. Developments in materials, electronics, and data processing have enabled electrochemical and optical sensors that can be deployed directly in soil, water, and air. These sensors can be used for continuous monitoring or discrete measurements and can be integrated into portable or automated systems. While such approaches offer clear advantages, challenges remain, including long-term stability, calibration in complex environments, and transfer from laboratory studies to routine field use. Addressing these challenges is necessary for wider adoption of environmental sensing technologies.

We welcome contributions focused on electrochemical and optical sensing approaches, development of sensing methodologies, and integration of sensors with engineering devices and monitoring systems. The Special Issue also covers applications of these technologies in agriculture and environmental monitoring, including runoff, freshwater pollution, and related environmental processes.

Topics of interest for publication include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Electrochemical sensors for soil, water, and air analysis;
  • Optical and spectroscopic sensing approaches for environmental monitoring;
  • Continuous and discrete environmental sensing strategies;
  • Sensor development, materials, and interfaces;
  • Integration of sensors with engineered and autonomous systems;
  • Sensor networks and monitoring platforms;
  • Applications in agriculture and soil management;
  • Monitoring of runoff, freshwater quality, and environmental pollution.

This Special Issue seeks to bring together methodological and applied studies that contribute to improved environmental sensing and monitoring in real-world conditions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Sensors is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
