Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

New developments in sensing technologies and artificial intelligence are reshaping how people interact with digital systems, allowing systems to not only sense user behavior but also interpret, learn from, and make decisions based on it. Modern interactive environments increasingly rely on intelligent systems that integrate data from multiple sources, including user behavior, wearable devices, and physiological or neural signals. This enables systems to move beyond direct user input and provide more continuous and adaptive interaction, meaning that systems can respond in real time and adjust their behavior based on the user’s state or context.

Such developments are particularly relevant across application domains such as cultural and artistic experiences, education, healthcare, and serious games, where user engagement and experience play a central role. These domains are increasingly supported by technologies such as virtual and augmented reality, brain–computer interfaces, and artificial intelligence, facilitating more immersive, responsive, and personalized interaction. In these contexts, intelligent interactive systems continuously interpret user behavior and state, support decision-making, and adapt over time to create more meaningful and personalized experiences. An intelligent museum guide, for example, may adjust its content based on a visitor’s level of engagement, while brain–computer interface systems can enable assistive communication for users with limited mobility. Similarly, intelligent immersive environments can respond dynamically to behavioral and physiological signals, and intelligent context-aware systems can personalize interaction across healthcare, education, and public settings.

Despite these advances, several important challenges remain. Effectively combining heterogeneous data while maintaining the interpretability and transparency of decisions made by intelligent systems remains a nontrivial task. These systems must also support continuous adaptation to time-varying user states and environments while performing reliably in real-world conditions, remaining robust over time, and generalizing across users with diverse characteristics. Practical factors, such as real-time processing constraints, energy efficiency, sensor reliability and data quality, calibration requirements, and user effort, further affect usability. Overall, designing interactive systems that are both effective and easy to use remains a key challenge.

This Special Issue focuses on the integration of intelligent sensing with human–computer interaction to support adaptive and user-centered systems. We invite contributions that explore both methodological developments and real-world applications, focusing on systems that effectively combine sensing, data-driven approaches, and interactive technologies.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Human–computer interaction and user-centered design;
  • Adaptive and context-aware interfaces;
  • Wearable, ubiquitous, and IoT sensors for human–computer interaction;
  • Sensor data processing and machine learning techniques for user experience evaluation;
  • Physiological and biometric sensing in adaptive systems;
  • Games including serious games and interactive learning systems;
  • Applications in healthcare and assistive technologies;
  • Intelligent environments and cultural heritage applications;
  • Virtual, augmented, and extended reality (VR/AR/XR);
  • Multimodal sensing and sensor fusion;
  • Invasive/noninvasive brain–computer interfaces (BCIs) and neuroadaptive systems;
  • User state estimation (e.g., attention, engagement, emotion).

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Sensors is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
