Dear Colleagues,
Environmental pollution, mainly caused by the rapid growth in industry and increasing use of synthetic chemicals, has created difficulties in determining air, soil and water quality. Additionally, the presence of new and emerging contaminants like heavy metals, micro/nanoplastics, pharmaceutical products and perfluorinated chemicals (or PFAS) continues to rise as these contaminants are now routinely being detected at trace levels. These emerging contaminants threaten human health and the environment. New sensing technologies (especially sensor probes that include nanomaterials, molecular recognition elements and advanced signal transduction mechanisms) have enabled more sensitive and portable environmental monitoring.
This Special Issue will present recent advances in novel designs, materials, detection mechanisms and analytical strategies focused on sensor probes used for environmental and pollution monitoring, which would increase the sensitivity, selectivity and real-world applicability of these devices.
Topics of interest for publication include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Design and synthesis of chemical and optical sensor probes for environmental monitoring
- Fluorescent, colorimetric and electrochemical probes for pollutant detection
- Nanomaterial-based sensors (e.g., carbon nanomaterials, quantum dots, metal nanoparticles)
- Biosensors and biomimetic sensing platforms for environmental analysis
- Sensors for emerging contaminants, including PFAS, pharmaceuticals and microplastics
- Portable, wearable or field-deployable environmental sensing systems
- Probe–analyte interaction mechanisms and signal transduction strategies
- Integration of sensors with data analytics, artificial intelligence or smart monitoring systems
- Applications of sensors in water, soil and atmospheric pollution monitoring
- AI-enabled sensors
This Special Issue seeks to highlight innovative research that advance the capabilities of sensor-probe technologies and support more effective environmental monitoring and pollution management.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process.
