Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Recent advancements have seen significant progress in sensor networks, the Internet of Things (IoT), and smart connected systems, ranging from smart city applications and Industry 5.0-compliant factories to connected vehicles in smart transportation systems. Considering the high penetration of such connected systems in the future, their security is paramount, as they are integral to everyday operations, and their uninterrupted functioning is essential to prevent disruptions to economic activities and social and emergency services. However, this growth has introduced a number of cybersecurity challenges, as resource-constrained sensors are vulnerable to diverse attacks.

At the same time, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning are employed to find innovative solutions to ensure cybersecurity, including real-time anomaly detection, intrusion prevention, and trustworthy cyber-physical security. This Special Issue is dedicated to exploring the critical area of cybersecurity of connected systems, highlighting the importance of safeguarding these systems from cyberattacks, unauthorized access, data breaches, and other security threats using AI and ML.

This Special Issue seeks to bring together research that addresses the challenges of implementing robust security frameworks, developing new cybersecurity technologies, and understanding the implications of cyber threats on sensor networks and connected systems. It will serve as a comprehensive forum for disseminating research findings, innovative security solutions, and best practices in this domain.

The scope of this Special Issue includes (but is not limited to) the following:

  • Lightweight and resource-aware cybersecurity for edge and embedded devices;
  • Federated learning, split learning, and privacy-preserving cybersecurity for distributed sensor systems;
  • Adversarial robustness, explainable AI (XAI), and trustworthy AI for cyber-physical security;
  • Cybersecurity of smart cities and intelligent transportation systems;
  • Cybersecurity of smart grids and critical infrastructure;
  • Blockchain, Hardware Root-of-Trust (HRoT), and decentralized authentication for sensor networks;
  • Real-time threat intelligence, digital twins, and autonomous cyber defence for smart infrastructure;
  • Agentic AI for automated cyber threat intelligence and incident response;
  • Large language model-driven cybersecurity automation in smart connected systems.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sensors is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
