Intent-Based Networking for IoT Systems

Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The Internet of Things (IoT) enables new services and verticals such as autonomous vehicles, smart homes, and smart industries. However, the diverse nature and different performance requirements of these services create major management and orchestration challenges. In addition, the heterogeneous structure of IoT—spanning edge, access, and cloud domains—further complicates coordination.

In this dense and complex environment, traditional network management becomes impractical. To overcome such challenges, Intent-Based Networking (IBN) represents a promising approach, enabling a more adaptive management of complex IoT environments by translating high-level user or business intents into automated, goal-driven network configurations.

This Special Issue (SI) aims to provide a platform for researchers and practitioners from both academia and industry to present new theories, architectures, and innovative mechanisms in the field of IBN for IoT Systems. The SI will cover recent advances and contributions in, but not limited to, the following topics:

  • IBN-enabled network slicing and orchestration for IoT systems;
  • Intent translation and assurance mechanisms in IoT environments;
  • AI/ML-driven intent interpretation, assurance, and policy optimization;
  • Security, trust, and privacy management through IBN;
  • Cross-domain coordination of edge–cloud–IoT infrastructures using IBN;
  • Experimental platforms, prototypes, and testbeds for IBN in IoT;
  • Emerging IBN applications and use cases (e.g., in Industry 5.0, smart cities, digital twins).

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sensors is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
