Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

With the dynamic expansion of the Internet of Things (IoT) and other smart technologies, there has been a huge development in sensor networks around the globe in various sectors, including smart cities, healthcare, transportation systems, industries, agriculture, energy sectors, etc., which generate enormous amounts of data that are crucial for monitoring real-time operations. However, simultaneously, there have been important issues in sensor networks that threaten data security, trust, and privacy, as traditional centralized data management cannot ensure transparency in these situations. Thus, blockchain technology presents itself as a promising antidote to such challenges by relying on decentralized trust, tamper-proof storage, and transparent transaction ledgers. By combining it with IoT sensors and networks, secure data sharing, cyber-resilient architecture, and autonomous operation modes using smart contracts become possible. Recent technological breakthroughs in lightweight consensus techniques, edge and fog computing, and scalable distributed ledgers have now enabled the fusion of blockchain with sensors. Finally, the fusion of blockchain with sensors acts as a cornerstone in building trusted smart systems based on reliability, accountability, and security.

This Special Issue invites cutting-edge research, innovations, and real-world applications in blockchain-enabled sensing for IoT and smart environments. It aims to unite researchers, practitioners, and stakeholders in exploring the interplay of sensing technologies, blockchain, and intelligent systems. We encourage submissions spanning theoretical advances, system prototypes, empirical studies, and deployments—whether full research papers or comprehensive reviews. All contributions should advance secure, scalable, and dependable sensor-driven solutions.

Topics of interest for publication include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Blockchain-based designs for sensor networks, IoT systems;
  • Secure and trusted data acquisition, storage, and sharing in a sensor-enabled environment;
  • Smart contracts: autonomous sensing, access control, and data monetization;
  • Lightweight blockchain methods for devices with limited resources like sensors;
  • Integrating blockchain technology with edge, fog, and cloud-assisted sensing systems;
  • Privacy-preserving sensing, secure data provenance methods;
  • Blockchain-based applications in smart cities, healthcare, industrial IoT, and environmental monitoring;
  • Challenges in performance evaluation, scalability, and interoperability of blockchain-based sensing applications;
  • AI and ML-based blockchain solutions for smart management of sensor data.

This Special Issue seeks to provide a timely platform for improving security and intelligent sensing systems. It encourages collaboration across disciplines and outlines future research directions for blockchain-enabled IoT systems and smart systems.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Sensors is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
