Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
This Special Issue, titled “Advanced Metasurface for Photonic Sensors”, aims to explore cutting-edge advancements in the design, fabrication, and application of metasurfaces for sensing applications. Metasurfaces, engineered to manipulate electromagnetic waves at subwavelength scales, offer unprecedented control over light-matter interactions, making them highly effective for a wide range of photonic sensor technologies. This Specail Issue seeks to provide a comprehensive overview of the latest innovations in metasurface-based photodetectors, image detections, bio-chemical sensors, and environmental sensing platforms.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:
Metasurface designs for enhanced sensor performance: novel geometries, topologies, and photonic resonators that optimize sensitivity, resolution, and selectivity of sensors.
Materials and fabrication techniques: advances in the materials used for metasurfaces (e.g., 2D materials, metamaterials) and the innovative fabrication methods that enable large-scale production and integration.
Hybrid metasurfaces for multifunctional sensing: combining metasurfaces with other photonic structures, such as waveguides, microcavities, or quantum materials, to enhance performance or enable multi-parameter sensing.
Applications in biosensing: the use of metasurfaces for detecting biological markers, pathogens, and DNA/RNA sequences, leveraging enhanced light-matter interactions for label-free sensing.
Chemical and environmental sensors: design of metasurfaces for detecting gases, pollutants, or environmental conditions (e.g., humidity, temperature), and their integration into compact, portable sensor devices.
Quantum and nonlinear metasurfaces: leveraging quantum effects or nonlinear optics for ultrasensitive, high-resolution sensing applications.
Theoretical and numerical modeling: modeling and simulation techniques for optimizing metasurface designs for various sensing applications.
AI-driven methods for metasurface optimization and image detection, such as deep learning algorithms for pattern recognition, convolutional neural networks for feature extraction, and reinforcement learning for adaptive design.
This Special Issue provides a platform for sharing interdisciplinary research that pushes the boundaries of metasurface technology in photonic sensor development, promoting new directions for the future of sensing technologies.
We are looking forward to your exciting papers!

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sensors is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
