Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The Special Issue focuses on advanced topics in mobile robotics and autonomous mobile systems equipped with perceiving capabilities. This objective is to utilize state-of-the-art technologies to conceive and design autonomous mobile systems capable of perceiving complex environments, situational context, and human intent to guarantee strong adaptive behaviors.
The features of autonomous mobile systems are fundamentally rooted in a new class of advanced materials. This includes smart sensors and adaptive actuators, coupled with distributed control networks and advanced nonlinear control algorithms, to achieve multi-modal sensing, adaptive control, accurate localization, and precise environmental understanding.
The Special Issue will include both theoretical and experimental aspects regarding autonomous mobile systems. The area is of great interest for a broad research community, including both technological innovation and new educational methodologies.
The Guest Editor aims to stimulate new ideas and to encourage the submission of immediate results, in the form of letters and short communications. Comprehensive reviews on the topics are also welcome.
The following topics are presented to invite contributors to include their papers in this SI.
- AI-driven perception and control for autonomous mobile systems;
- Ecological and environmental perception for autonomous mobile systems;
- Autonomous mobile systems with the capability to perceive hazardous environments, enhancing operational safety and providing robust assistance in hazardous environments.
To advance the design of Autonomous mobile systems, studies addressing the following points are welcome.
- Smart sensors and adaptive actuators;
- Self-organizing localization and control platforms for autonomous mobile systems;
- Design tools for autonomous mobile systems: model-driven systems engineering framework;
- Hardware solutions for integrating perception on chip in autonomous mobile systems;
- Nature-inspired sensing for autonomous mobile systems.
A particular interest will be given to contributions that use advanced concepts and principles of modern neuroscience and artificial intelligence, which could be the future key pillars of autonomous mobile systems.
This Special Issue maintains an interdisciplinary point of view to foster a network of scientists to carry out prospective scientific projects in the field.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Robotics is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1800 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
