Dear Colleagues,
The current accelerated reduction of the global cryosphere makes further study of its changes and dynamics a priority and an urgent matter due to its imminent disappearance. Its absence is already total and irreversible in many cryospheric areas and imminent in the most marginal ones. Current processes related to climate and global change mean that some trends predicted in the recent past have been fulfilled and/or accelerated in the present, in the worst cases. These dynamics of retreat, and even disappearance, are leading us to witness the final moments of these ice environmental records, both generally in many of the environments where the cryosphere is present and across the entire planet. Therefore, it remains necessary to maintain monitoring of cryosphere-related phenomena, to refine the precision of the techniques used for their detection and measurement, and to contribute to expanding big data bases from multiple perspectives and at different scales. This leads to results that undoubtedly have consequences for the dynamics occurring in hydrology, vegetation cover, ecosystems, landscapes, and potential hazards.
This Special Issue focuses on contributions to our understanding of cryosphere changes through the application of remote sensing, expanding upon and updating the findings achieved to date and those of previous special issues. The main objective is to update our understanding of remote sensing in relation to the retreat and disappearance of ice in a broad sense, its dynamics, and changes in processes related to permafrost, permafrost environments, and cryosphere degradation in all its forms. These processes are analyzed using diverse techniques at local, regional, and global scales, recognizing that local dynamics contribute to refining patterns established in global models. The aim is to bring together technical studies applied to the cryosphere, in keeping with the established approach of this Remote Sensing journal.
