Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Plants are constantly exposed to a wide range of abiotic stresses—including drought, salinity, extreme temperatures, and heavy metal toxicity—that pose significant threats to growth, productivity, and overall crop quality. Understanding how plants perceive and respond to these environmental challenges through intricate physiological, biochemical, and molecular mechanisms is essential for the development of resilient and sustainable crop systems.

In this context, we are pleased to present the Special Issue "Plant Responses to Environmental Stresses: Mechanisms, Adaptation, and Mitigation Approaches." As editors of this collection, we aim to curate a diverse range of contributions that underscore the complexity and urgency of addressing plant responses to environmental stress, particularly in light of accelerating climate change and the growing demands placed on agricultural production.

The central focus of this issue is the advancement of our understanding of the signaling pathways and gene regulatory networks that mediate plant responses to environmental stressors. These mechanisms coordinate a suite of adaptive responses that enable plants to survive and maintain functionality under adverse conditions. Key components of these responses include antioxidants, osmolytes, phytohormones, and structural modifications—all of which play vital roles in preserving cellular homeostasis and enhancing stress tolerance.

In addition to exploring the mechanistic basis of plant stress responses, this issue also highlights innovative mitigation strategies. These include the use of biostimulants, beneficial microbial inoculants, genetic improvement techniques, and sustainable agronomic practices aimed at promoting plant resilience and productivity. Furthermore, the integration of high-throughput omics technologies and advanced phenotyping platforms is opening new frontiers in the identification of stress-responsive genes, pathways, and biomarkers—accelerating the development of climate-resilient crops.

We believe this Special Issue not only contributes to advancing fundamental scientific knowledge but also offers practical insights for the development of climate-smart agriculture. The selected articles will showcase innovative research across a wide range of economically important crops and stress conditions, providing a comprehensive and forward-looking perspective on plant stress biology.
