The Role of Plants in Phytoremediation of Particulate Matter and Other Air Pollutants

Dear Colleagues,

Over the last few decades, major changes have taken place in human surroundings that were not associated with a concern for environment. Therefore, now, the priority for city planners of urban spaces should be to ensure optimal living conditions. One of the most dangerous inhaled pollutants is particulate matter (PM). If pollutants have been emitted to the atmosphere, the only possible method to clean the air is via environmental biotechnology—phytoremediation.

Today, the importance of air quality is a topic in which it is extremely important to invest in terms of research activities. This Special Issue of Plants will highlight the importance of vegetation planted along communication routes, cities and other urbanized areas in reducing and accumulating particulate matter and other air pollutants.

The research proposed in this Special Issue of Plants will make a significant contribution to the development of phytoremediation technology. This may result in the development of appropriate recommendations for the phytoremediation of air pollution in urban areas and the development of "green tools" for landscape architects and road engineers. Thanks to this, it will be possible to reduce the level of particulate matter, heavy metals, microplastics and other pollutants in the air, while maintaining the right balance between the economy and improving the quality of life of urban residents. Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Plants is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
