Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

We cordially invite you to submit research and review papers to the upcoming Special Issue of Plants, entitled “Nutrient Acquisition and Utilization Processes in Plants”.

All plants require the same essential mineral elements (nutrients) to flourish. However, the concentrations required can differ, both between and within plant species, something which is further influenced by the environment. The acquisition of nutrients by roots is characterized by selectivity of the rhizosphere mobilization and uptake of nutrients, while  the utilization of nutrients includes the process by which plants use nutrients for their growth and development. Overall, understanding and improving nutrient acquisition and utilization in plants is of great importance for the development of sustainable agriculture as it can help to increase crop yields and reduce the impact of low soil availability of nutrients and other environmental stresses (e.g., drought), thus reducing the need for fertilizer inputs. Since plant-based diets are a major source of mineral elements for the world's population, understanding the ability of plants to the increase acquisition of nutrients (e.g., biofortification) is a crucial step in improving food quality, and consequently human nutrition and health.

This Special Issue attempts to provide up-to-date understandings of (1) strategies for acquisition of nutrients from nutrient-poor soils, including root–soil–microbe interactions; (2) long-distance xylem and phloem transport, including the loading of nutrients into edible tissues; and (3) molecular regulation of nutrient transport processes.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Plants is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
