Dear Colleagues,
We invite contributions that advance our understanding of plant stress physiology from an integrative perspective, linking volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions to underlying metabolic adaptations. Plants face a wide range of biotic and abiotic stressors, prompting dynamic metabolism, which is often reflected in their VOC emission profiles. Thus, these volatile emissions serve as key signals that mediate intra- and inter-plant communication, influencing ecological interactions (above- and below-ground) and impacting atmospheric processes. This Special Issue highlights cutting-edge research exploring the biochemical and physiological mechanisms linking VOC emissions to metabolic adaptations under stress conditions and the ecological and applied implications of these processes.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following research areas:
- Emission Mechanisms and Biosynthetic Pathways:
Investigations into the enzymatic routes, genetic regulation, and cellular processes governing VOC biosynthesis and release in response to various stressors, as well as the influence of environmental factors on these processes. - Metabolic Adaptations and Omics Approaches:
Research employing integrative omics techniques (e.g., metabolomics, transcriptomics, proteomics) to characterize how plants reprogram their metabolism under stress and how these changes correlate with alterations in VOC emissions. - Ecological Functions and Interactions:
Studies examining the role of VOCs in mediating plant–plant, plant–herbivore, and plant–microbe interactions and how these volatile signals contribute to community dynamics and ecosystem resilience under stress. - Atmospheric Chemistry and Environmental Impact:
Contributions assessing the impact of plant VOCs on atmospheric processes such as aerosol formation, ozone dynamics, and climate regulation, including their implications for air quality and global environmental change. - Applied Perspectives and Innovative Methodologies:
Papers addressing the potential applications of VOC research in agriculture, pest management, and the development of bio-based products, as well as novel analytical or experimental approaches that further our ability to study VOC emissions and metabolic adaptations.
We welcome original research articles, comprehensive reviews, and methodological papers that offer novel insights and foster interdisciplinary collaboration in this rapidly evolving field.
