Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The development of efficient and targeted drug delivery systems is a critical goal in pharmaceutical research. Smart nanocarriers and extracellular vesicle (EV)-based systems are emerging as next-generation platforms for targeted drug delivery, offering high potential for precision medicine thanks to their unique advantages in terms of biocompatibility, versatility, and targeting efficiency.
This Special Issue aims to collect cutting‑edge research that integrates biological inspiration with engineering principles to overcome the limitations of conventional delivery systems.
We invite contributions on the design and fabrication of nanocarriers and EVs via biomimetic and hybrid approaches, including advanced surface modification and functionalization. Studies elucidating nanobiointeractions at target tissues and cellular receptors to reveal uptake and trafficking mechanisms are particularly encouraged.
We also emphasize the importance of manufacturing and translational challenges, encouraging contributions on scalable production, GMP‑compliant processes, and the standardization of downstream protocols. In this context, a key focus is the exploration of alternative, natural EV sources—including plant‑derived vesicles, bacterial and algal EVs, and milk‑derived EVs—as promising systems delivery due to their scalability, cost-effectiveness, and safety.
By integrating insights from nanotechnology, pharmaceutical sciences, and bioengineering, this Special Issue aims to advance clinically translatable delivery platforms, bridging experimental innovation and real‑world therapeutic application.
We hope this Special Issue will stimulate interdisciplinary collaborations and contribute to accelerating the transition from bench to bedside.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Pharmaceutics is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2900 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
