Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
In recent years, there has been growing interest in natural polymer alternatives for use in biomedical and biotechnological applications. Among these alternatives, chitosan stands out as the most versatile due to its complete biodegradability, excellent biocompatibility, diverse bioactivity, and low toxicity. While significant progress has been achieved in modifying chitosan through synthetic processes involving its C3/C6 secondary/primary hydroxy (−OH) and the C2 amino (−NH2) active sites, its solubility under physiological conditions remains limited, thus hindering its wider adoption on a larger scale. It is important to continue exploring the promising pharmaceutical applications of chitosan and its derivatives, highlighting essential information on its bioactivity and various uses in the biomedical field.
This Special Issue aims to gather the latest research advancements in chitosan and its derivatives and their biological applications in various areas, emphasizing recent interesting investigations in both fundamental and applied research.
As you are a renowned expert, we are pleased to invite you to contribute a research or review article to this Issue.
- Synthesis, characterization, and biological evaluation of chitosan and its derivatives;
- Chitosan-based nanoformulation as biomaterials;
- Structure–activity relationship of chitosan and its derivatives;
- Application of chitosan-based materials, including composites, nanoparticles, nanofibers, or hybrid organic materials in biomedicine.
We look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Pharmaceutics is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2900 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
