Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Viral diseases have become a major health challenge in the whole world. Recently, the COVID-19 pandemic, which was triggered by the SARS-CoV-2 virus at the start of this decade, has shaken the global health sector in all possible ways. This leads to an increased need to develop new antivirals through innovative approaches that extend beyond targeting established viral proteins. Vaccination is the best precautionary measure against such an ailment to date. However, antiviral treatments are the only immediate cure. Recent progress has shown promising results for antiviral development, but there remains a constant need to expand new antivirals using different approaches to effectively combat viral propagation. Recent progress in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning has made antiviral development less time-consuming. However, increasing the target specificity of antivirals requires understanding the precise targeting site of these drugs to viral proteins. By combining new insights into structural aspects with developed technological supports, we can discover effective antivirals that can halt future pandemics.

This Special Issue invites authors to contribute original research articles, reviews, and short communications on strategies and recent developments in the pursuit of new antivirals. Structural analysis and AI technology-combined studies are also highly encouraged.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Pathogens is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
