Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues, 

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is no longer a looming threat—it is one of the most urgent crises facing modern medicine, quietly undermining decades of clinical progress and making routine medical procedures risky. The rapid rise in multidrug-resistant (MDR), extensively drug-resistant (XDR), and even pandrug-resistant (PDR) pathogens, coupled with a stagnant antibiotic pipeline, leaves us with a clear directive: we need innovative, alternative antimicrobial strategies, and we need them now. 

Compounding this crisis are complex microbial behaviors such as biofilm formation on living tissues and medical devices, alongside fastidious or culture-negative infections that slip through standard diagnostic nets and evade traditional treatments. To meet these challenges head-on, we would like to invite you to contribute a paper to this Special Issue in Pathogens, “Innovative Antimicrobial Strategies for Future Therapeutics.” 

Our goal is to highlight the discovery, development, and translational application of next-generation tools designed to shatter conventional resistance mechanisms. We welcome original research articles and reviews focused on next-generation antimicrobial strategies, including antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), lipopeptides, phage therapy, synergistic therapies, anti-biofilm and anti-virulence approaches, molecular diagnostics, smart biomaterials, nanotechnology, and targeted drug-delivery systems. Particular interest will be given to studies addressing difficult-to-treat infections such as periprosthetic joint infections (PJI), orthopedic and device-associated infections, biofilm-mediated diseases and broader infectious challenges viewed through a One Health lens. 

While excellent research exists on isolated resistance mechanisms, this Special Issue aims to bridge the gap between benchside molecular discovery and bedside clinical application. By uniting brilliant minds across microbiology, infectious diseases, peptide chemistry, biomaterials, and pharmaceutical sciences, we hope to build a forward-looking roadmap for tackling refractory pathogens. 

We invite you to submit original research articles, reviews, short communications, perspectives, or case reports. Let us work together to shape the future of infectious disease therapeutics. We look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Pathogens is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
