Sustainable Diets: Powering the Future of Food and Planetary Health
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
A sustainable diet is based on the human requirement for nutrients. Beyond individual nutrition, a sustainable diet encompasses the interconnectedness of social, economic, human, and planetary health. To address the urgent global challenges linked to current consumption patterns—including climate change, biodiversity loss, and resource depletion—an immediate transition is necessary. There is a need to move toward models of consumption and production that ensure the long-term sustainability of resources, the environment, and human health.
This critical transition requires multidimensional approaches: the adoption of resilient plant-based diets that contain the appropriate proportions of plant and animal foods, maintaining health and preventing diet-related diseases, drastic reductions in food loss and waste, and the development of robust guidelines that empower the population with the necessary knowledge for sustainability. Achieving these goals requires advancing interdisciplinary research in areas like nutrition, food sector innovation, and the circular bioeconomy. This progress, combined with the creation of evidence-based policies, will guide our society towards a sustainable path of nutrition.
We invite researchers to submit original articles and reviews that contribute to this essential dialogue. This Special Issue seeks to synthesize cutting-edge knowledge and explore innovative solutions for the transformation of food systems. Your contribution is vital to shaping the future of healthy and sustainable consumption.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Nutrients is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2900 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
