Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Probiotics are live microorganisms that, when administered in adequate amounts, confer health benefits to the host. The use and acceptance of probiotic products is increasing globally due to their documented health benefits. They may help to prevent complications such as gut dysbiosis in preterm infants, in breast milk, and in mothers or infants who have been treated with antibiotics. Additionally, probiotics may also provide health benefits during pregnancy, such as preventing mastitis, constipation, postpartum depression, and the growth of Group B Streptococcus bacteria. Despite these potential benefits, uncertainty remains regarding the effectiveness of probiotics for human health, largely because many studies do not consider that the effects are likely to be strain-, dose-, and condition-specific, as well as dependent on health status, age, etc. The individual response to an intervention may be unique and is partly determined by health status, age, and the composition of the gut microbiome.
Research into the role of probiotics in preventing and treating premature delivery, preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, obesity, and diseases related to pathogenic microbes during the perinatal and infant periods represents an exciting and rapidly advancing field. However, it is essential to choose probiotics that have been scientifically tested for safety and efficacy in pregnant women.
