Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The relationship between nutrition and oral health is a cornerstone of overall well-being, influencing individuals across all stages of life. While optimal nutrition is fundamental for developing and maintaining oral health, the functional capacity of the oral cavity directly determines nutritional intake. This creates a critical cycle where deteriorating oral health can lead to poor nutrition, which in turn further compromises oral and systemic health.

To break this cycle, enhancing individual efficacy in self-care is essential. However, as the disease progresses, professional oral medical and surgical treatments become necessary to restore function and provide a foundation for effective long-term care.

This Special Issue of Nutrients, “The Interplay Between Nutrition, Oral Health, and the Effectiveness of Oral Care”, is dedicated to presenting high-quality peer-reviewed research that delves into this complex interplay. We aim to enhance our understanding of how nutritional status influences oral health outcomes and, conversely, how oral health and its treatments impact nutritional status and the effectiveness of care.

We invite contributions that explore, but are not limited to, the following themes:

  • The role of personal, familial, and socio-environmental factors in shaping nutrition and oral health behaviors across all age groups.
  • Epidemiological and clinical studies examining the associations between dietary patterns, nutrient status, and oral diseases in specific age populations.
  • The impact of nutritional status on overall treatment outcomes following oral surgical and medical procedures.
  • Innovative strategies, educational programs, and technological interventions designed to improve the efficacy of both home care and clinical treatment through integrated nutritional and oral health support.

Our goal is to synthesize knowledge that bridges the gap between research and practice. We welcome the submission of original research articles and comprehensive reviews that offer new insights into effective policies, preventive strategies, and clinical approaches. By disseminating this knowledge, we aim to ultimately enhance health practices, empower individuals, and optimize the quality of life for diverse populations by utilizing a holistic approach to nutrition and oral health.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Nutrients is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2900 CHF (Swiss Francs).
