Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Diet quality is a critical public health concern as inadequate diets significantly contribute to overall mortality and disabilities, as well as non-communicable diseases. The complexity in defining diet quality arises from the diverse nutritional needs of individuals such as age, sex, disease status, and activity levels, alongside the requirements of vulnerable groups like children and pregnant women. Key parameters for assessing diet quality include energy and nutrients intake, nutrient density, moderation intake, variety, and food safety. Several dietary metrics have been developed to assess the quality and diversity of diets, recognizing the importance of dietary variety for overall health and well-being. Diet quality indicators are essential to monitor dietary trends, raise awareness of diet-related issues, and update policies to improve diets and health outcomes, as well as to analyze the impact of the food system on the diet. To assess diet quality, it is essential to analyze data sources and processing methods, considering sustainability factors such as the balance between crop yields and nutrient density, weighing the benefits of animal-source foods against environmental impacts, and promoting healthier and more sustainable dietary practices.
