Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Metasurfaces, as planar artificial nanostructures with subwavelength unit cells, enable flexible manipulation of electromagnetic wavefront, polarization, amplitude, phase and frequency at an ultra-thin interface. Compared with traditional bulky optical devices, metasurfaces exhibit prominent advantages in miniaturization, integration and low loss, and have become one of the most vibrant research frontiers in photonics, electromagnetics and metamaterials over the past decade. Nevertheless, conventional metasurface design heavily relies on physical intuition and iterative parameter sweeping for realizing multi-functionality, multi-wavelength compatibility and dynamic reconfiguration.

Furthermore, driven by the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence, data-driven optimization algorithms and computational electromagnetics, high-efficiency design methodologies are reshaping the paradigm of metasurface research. Machine learning, neural networks, inverse or direct design algorithms and optimization frameworks provide powerful tools to break traditional design limitations, facilitating the fast discovery of high-performance meta-atoms and enabling the design of more complex and high-performance metasurface devices. Benefiting from these design strategies, metasurfaces are continuously expanding their application boundaries, covering holography, optical imaging, beam steering, polarization engineering, optical computing, sensing, wireless communication, and so on.

This Special Issue aims to gather cutting-edge original research and insightful review articles on intelligent design methods for advanced photonics devices and metasurfaces, metasurface deep-learning-assisted novel fabrication methods for these metasurfaces, and their wide and advanced multifunctional applications. We welcome contributions that address fundamental challenges as well as experimentally verified functional devices; we expect to build a communication platform for researchers and promote the development of next-generation intelligent metasurface systems with this journal (Nanomaterials, IF:4.8; JCR: Q2).

Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Nanomaterials is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
