Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
One of the most intriguing goals in the field of nanophotonic materials and devices is the development of systems with physical and chemical properties tailored for highly efficient and color-tunable light emission. The reduction in material size to the nanometer scale brings out unique properties, fundamentally different from those of macroscopic components, mainly due to quantum confinement effects and a high specific surface area. These characteristics open an exceptionally wide range of applications that exploit key luminescence processes, such as exciton or band-to-band recombination and emission from surface defects.
Current research in nanophotonics is driven by increasingly ambitious challenges: the precise control of optical properties through size engineering; the alteration of surfaces via doping and functionalization; and the integration of these materials within specialized photonic architectures. This focus is essential for the advancement of technologies in optoelectronics, lasing, photovoltaics, bioimaging and high-sensitivity optical sensing.
The purpose of this Special Issue, titled "Luminescent Nanostructures and Nanodevices", is to bring together experimental, theoretical and computational studies on nanosized materials, ranging from semiconductors to insulators, in both pure and alloy forms. A relevant focus is to highlight the state of the art in the manufacturing and characterization of these systems, aiming to understand their remarkable optical properties at a fundamental level and advance their potential for upcoming photonic applications.
