Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Nanostructured metamaterials and metasurfaces—the two-dimensional counterparts of bulk metamaterials—represent one of the most dynamic frontiers in modern materials science and photonics. With their low profile, high integration potential, and design flexibility, metasurfaces are now at the forefront of developing next-generation optical devices. By engineering artificially designed subwavelength structures, these materials exhibit extraordinary electromagnetic properties that transcend those found in nature—properties derived not from their chemical composition but from their structural architecture. Over the past decade, this field has witnessed remarkable advances, offering unprecedented capabilities in controlling light across the electromagnetic spectrum, from microwaves to optical frequencies. Additionally, the convergence of nanofabrication techniques, computational design, and fundamental physics has opened new avenues for innovation in areas ranging from high-speed communication and ultrasensitive sensing to energy harvesting and quantum technologies.

This Special Issue aims to capture the most recent progress and emerging application prospects of nanostructured metamaterials and metasurfaces. We welcome contributions that explore both fundamental and applied aspects of this rapidly evolving domain. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Advanced Material Platforms: All-dielectric, plasmonic, graphene-based, and hybrid nanostructures for tailored electromagnetic responses.
  • Wavefront Engineering and Control: Novel metasurface architectures for beamforming, polarization manipulation, phase control, and wavefront shaping.
  • Active and Tunable Systems: Reconfigurable metamaterials and metasurfaces incorporating phase-change materials, nonlinear effects, or external stimuli for dynamic functionality.
  • Energy and Sensing Applications: High-efficiency absorbers, selective thermal emitters, energy harvesting devices, and ultra-sensitive detection platforms.
  • Manufacturing and Integration: Innovative nanofabrication techniques, scalable manufacturing approaches, and practical device integration strategies.

This Special Issue seeks to bring together leading researchers to share their latest findings and to stimulate discussion on the remaining challenges and future directions for translating these laboratory breakthroughs into transformative real-world technologies. We welcome original research articles, letters and comprehensive reviews that advance our understanding of structure–property relationships, design concepts, and practical applications of nanostructured metamaterials and metasurfaces.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Nanomaterials is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
