Dear Colleagues,
The continuous emergence and re-emergence of novel pathogenic microorganisms pose severe threats to global public health, livestock breeding and ecological safety. Cross-species transmission, mutation, and drug resistance of pathogens frequently trigger unexplained infectious diseases, while traditional detection methods face limitations such as low sensitivity, long testing cycles and poor on-site applicability. Rapid, accurate, low-cost and high-throughput detection technologies have become an urgent research priority for epidemic prevention and control.
This Special Issue focuses on cutting-edge research covering multiple subtopics: novel molecular detection strategies for emerging bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites; biosensor and nanomaterial-based rapid detection platforms; point-of-care testing (POCT) devices for field pathogen identification; artificial intelligence-assisted microbial signal analysis; multiplex synchronous detection of mixed pathogens; standardized sample preprocessing techniques; and evaluation systems for detection kit performance. We welcome submissions of original research articles, reviews and short communications that report innovative detection methodologies, practical application cases, or systematic comparative analyses of existing testing tools. All submissions will undergo strict peer review to ensure the publication of high-quality works guiding the development of next-generation pathogen detection systems.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Microorganisms is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
