Dear Colleagues,
Despite effective suppression of HIV-1 replication and increased survival with HAART, HIV-1 rebounds in all patients post-HAART cessation due to “HIV-1 viral reservoir” cells with latent or low-replicating HIV infection in lymphoid tissues. In addition, some HAART-treated patients fail to reverse hyper-inflammatory activation and achieve full immune recovery.
Fully understanding how HIV reservoirs and chronic inflammation persist during HAART and elucidating the mechanism underlying “immune nonresponder (INR)” patients will aid the development of novel therapeutics for chronic HIV-1 infection-associated diseases, approaching a functional or sterilizing cure of HIV-1 infection.
This Special Issue welcomes research articles (1) providing new knowledge related to HIV-1 infection/replication, HIV reservoir persistence, residual chronic inflammation, and impaired host immunity during HAART and (2) offering novel approaches to control HIV-1 infection/replication, further eliminate viral reservoirs, resolve chronic inflammation, and recover/enhance host immune response during HAART.

Microorganisms is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
