Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Membranes play a central role in today’s transition toward more sustainable water, energy, and raw material management. At the intersection of environmental, technological, and health challenges, membrane technologies are powerful and versatile tools, especially in ion-exchange and water purification processes.
This Special Issue of the journal Membranes focuses on membranes for ion-exchange and water purification, two fast-growing fields both scientifically and industrially. We welcome original contributions addressing the design, functionalization, characterization, modeling, and application of membranes in processes such as the following:
- Reverse osmosis;
- Electrodialysis and other forms of dialysis (diffusion dialysis, Donnan dialysis, acid/base dialysis, etc.);
- Nanofiltration and ultrafiltration targeting inorganic or organic contaminants;
- Selective ion separation (e.g., heavy metals, nutrients);
- Industrial or wastewater purification;
- Hybrid or intensified systems (e.g., photo-electro-membrane systems, bio-membranes);
- Development of bio-based or sustainable membranes.
This call is also open to interdisciplinary work addressing issues of sustainability, eco-design, energy consumption, and the integration of membranes into multiscale or intelligent systems (from lab to industrial pilot, involving AI, IoT, etc.).
We accept the following types of submissions:
- Original research articles;
- High-value scientific reviews;
- Technical notes or relevant industrial case studies.
We particularly encourage submissions that offer the following:
- Innovative approaches;
- Rigorous experimental results;
- Technological perspectives;
- Critical analysis of current limitations in the field.
All articles will be peer-reviewed through the journal’s standard single-blind process.
We hope this Special Issue will serve as a scientific reference point for researchers, engineers, and industry professionals dedicated to advancing membrane technologies for cleaner, more accessible, and more efficient water resources.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Membranes is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2200 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
