Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Composite materials and structures are widely used in the aerospace, automotive, energy, marine, and biomedical engineering fields due to their lightweight and high-strength characteristics. Because they often operate under harsh loading conditions, including high temperature, vibration, impact, and high-speed gas corrosion, an increasing number of problems, such as excessive vibration responses, functional degradation, dynamic fatigue, and impact damage, have occurred. Multifunctional coating has increasingly played an important role in structural thermal protection and improvement in static and dynamic mechanical performance. In recent years, the development of coating material design, coating techniques, and microstructural tailoring has led to the emergence of various advanced coating systems, such as functionally graded coatings, thermal barrier coatings, corrosion-/wear-resistant composite coatings, and damping coatings.

Considerable progress has been made in the study of mechanical problems in coating materials and structures. However, numerous issues have not been fully resolved, such as the bonding effect between the coatings and substrate interfaces of various materials, the response prediction of thermal vibration and thermal impact of different coated structures, the related nonlinear dynamic problems caused by coating materials, and failure and damage mechanisms under extreme thermal and mechanical coupling conditions, among others.

This Special Issue cordially invites submissions of original research articles, reviews, or communications related to the design, modeling, testing, and preparation of multifunctional coatings and their applications in composite materials and structures. Contributions focusing on multifunctional integration of coatings, interface behavior analysis, thermal-vibration response, thermal-impact response, performance degradation and evaluation, and optimization analysis are particularly welcome.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Materials is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
