Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The science of atoms and simple molecules and the science of matter from microstructures to larger scales are both well established. A remaining extremely important size-related challenge exists at the nanoscale—roughly the dimensional scale between 10 and 100 molecular diameters—where the fundamental properties of materials are determined and can be engineered. Nanotechnology has enjoyed explosive growth in the past few years, specifically in nanofabrication techniques employed to construct nanoelectronics devices, which has advanced tremendously in recent years. Obviously, revolutionary changes in the ability to measure, organize, and manipulate matter at the nanoscale are highly beneficial for electronics, with the persistent trend of downsizing devices, components, and integrated systems. In turn, the miniaturization required by electronics is one of the major driving forces for nanoscience and nanotechnology. Hence, there is a need for a comprehensive, interdisciplinary account of the technology and science that underpin nanoelectronics, covering the underlying physics, nanostructures, nanomaterials, and nanodevices. A principal goal of nanotechnology is to control and exploit these properties in structures and devices at the atomic, molecular, and supramolecular levels.

This Special Issue is open to new advances in nanoelectronics involving:

  • Advances in growth, fabrication, and measurement techniques for nanostructures.
  • Electron transport in semiconductor nanostructures.  
  • Electronics in traditional low-dimensional structures.
  • Advances in 2D material-based  transistors
  • Advances in nanomaterial-based transistors.
  • Advances in nanomaterial-based optical modulators
  • Nanomaterials in communication electronics and technology
  • Advances in nanomaterial-based optical sources such as LEDs and lasers, etc.
  • Nanomaterial-based terahertz sources and detectors.
  • Nanomaterial-based humidity sensors, gas sensors, biosensors and optical sensors.
  • High-performance operation of nanomaterial-based devices for space applications.
  • Use of nanomaterials in thermoelectric devices.
  • Use of nanomaterials in thermal management devices.
  • Use of nanomaterials in fuel cell applications.
  • Use of nanomaterials in lithium-ion batteries. 
  • Use of nanomaterials in supercapacitors.
  • Use of nanomaterials in photovoltatic applications.
  • Use of nanomaterials in photocatalysis and applications.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Materials is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
