17–20 August 2021, Online
14th International Symposium on Advances in Technology Education (ISATE2021)

The International Symposium on Advances in Technology Education (ISATE) event started in 2007 as international academic exchange between ten engineering colleges (known as KOSEN in Japan) and three polytechnics in Singapore, and has expanded by the participation of institutions worldwide. Its aim was to enhance the quality of Engineering Education in each participating institution. ISATE 2021 will be the first ISATE to be organized outside Asia.

In ISATE 2021, KOSEN will present the result of their project started in 2019, “GEAR,” an educational program to foster students to become autonomous engineers. In the GEAR project, teams of students and faculty members conduct research and develop new ecological and highly efficient functional materials needed in the future for implementation in society. The research team includes many researchers from companies, national research institutes, and universities. KOSEN students grow up as engineers and researchers by practicing research aimed at social implementation.

Since 2019, the GEAR project has contributed to the development in the fields of Materials and Medical and Nursing Care. The creation of new materials and the development of medical care technology using IoT technology, which is required in Society 5.0, are in progress. ISATE 2021 has a special session for the GEAR project entitled “Health Technology and Medical Engineering” and “Functional Engineering Materials.” Registration as the audience is open till 31 July 2021.

The results of practical research and development carried out by the GEAR project will be presented in ISATE, and special issues will be published in MDPI journals: “Assistive Technology and Biomechatronics Engineering” in Sensors, “Advanced Materials for Societal Implementation” in Materials. This special issue will be a collection of some of the outstanding studies presented at ISATE 2021 and related studies outside ISATE 2021 (open for submissions till 30 November 2021).
