Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to announce a Special Issue focusing on “Microalgae Cultures and Their Value in Nutraceutical/Cosmetic Industry”. Microalgae biomass has emerged as a transformative resource for the nutraceutical and cosmetic industry, offering a sustainable and versatile feedstock rich in bioactive compounds, whilst also addressing global challenges in nutrition, health, and food security. This Special Issue aims to explore cutting-edge research and innovations that harness microalgae for the development of high-value nutraceuticals and cosmeceuticals, capitalizing on their rich content of antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, pigments, carotenoids, prebiotics, and bioactive peptides. The focus encompasses advancements in (i) cultivation technologies, (ii) bioprocessing techniques, (iii) the exploration of microalgae's applications in nutraceutical and cosmeceutical fields, and (iv) the evaluation of functional properties and health benefits of microalgae-derived products both prior to and following their incorporation into end-use products (i.e., novel foods, food additives, wellness and personal care products). Contributions addressing challenges such sustainability at large-scale production, regulatory considerations, market integration, and comprehensive technoeconomic analyses are encouraged. This Special Issue invites articles bridging the gap between fundamental research and industrial applications, providing a platform for novel insights that drive the transition toward sustainable and health-promoting nutraceutical/cosmeceutical products. Researchers, industry experts, and policymakers are invited to contribute original articles, reviews, short communications, and case studies. Join us in shaping the future of microalgae in human health and the cosmeceutical/nutraceutical industries.

Key topics of interest include the following:

  • Innovative cultivation processes designed to enhance the production of targeted biomolecules for health and wellness applications.
  • Consumer acceptance and regulatory challenges for microalgae-based health and cosmetic products.
  • Downstream processing technologies for high-quality food-grade products.
  • Assessment of the nutritional value and safety of microalgae-based food products.
  • Exploration of microalgae-derived compounds in skincare formulations and anti-aging products.
  • Characterization of microalgae-derived proteins, lipids, pigments, antioxidants, and other active biomolecules.
  • Comparative studies on microalgae's nutritional value versus traditional food sources.
  • Case studies and pilot-scale trials of microalgae in novel food applications.
  • Economic considerations, focusing on market potential, production cost-effectiveness, and commercialization strategies for microalgae-derived nutritional products.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Marine Drugs is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2900 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
