Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Artificial intelligence is shifting manufacturing from reactive control to predictive and adaptive operations. Yet many deployments stall at the pilot stage due to data quality, integration constraints, and limited trust in model outputs. This Special Issue, ‘Artificial Intelligence in Manufacturing’, seeks high-quality research and industrial case studies that demonstrate robust methods, transparent validation, and measurable impact across design, production, quality, maintenance, and supply chain operations.
We welcome contributions spanning data-driven modelling and hybrid approaches that combine machine learning with physics-based knowledge, as well as architectures that enable real-time decision support at the edge and in the cloud. Particular attention is encouraged for safety-critical and regulated environments, including work on explainability, uncertainty quantification, robustness, cybersecurity, and governance. Submissions may present novel algorithms, benchmark datasets, reproducible pipelines, digital twin frameworks, and deployment patterns that support scalable adoption.
Research topics may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Computer vision for inspection, metrology, and anomaly detection.
- Predictive and prescriptive maintenance, condition monitoring.
- Process optimisation, scheduling, and resource allocation.
- Intelligent robotics, cobots, and human–robot collaboration.
- Digital twins, Industrial IoT, edge AI, and federated learning.
- Energy and sustainability optimisation, emissions and waste reduction.
- MLOps for manufacturing, lifecycle monitoring, drift, and retraining.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Machines is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
