Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The ongoing SARS-CoV-2 has brought many in the scientific community to question our preparedness vis-à-vis the ever-growing challenge of the emergence and the re-emergence of infectious agents and its potential devastating consequences.  When the field of metagenomics started to take shape, it was quickly suggested that finally, we have a tool that will be capable to not only forecast new infectious disease outbreaks, but also to track the circulation of new variants of novel strains.  After almost a year, we are at the time of deep soul searching and evaluating how we did at the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.  Basically, it is time to go over our success, and our failures and to propose what we should have done and do in case another pandemic hits us.

The Special Issue on “Metagenomics: forecasting and tracking emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases” is intended to provide a unique international forum aimed at covering a broad description of results involving the application of the metagenomic approach to identify novel viruses.  Scientists working in a wide range of disciplines are invited to contribute their data on methodologies that helped them to identify novel viruses and tracking their spready in the wide population.  Special consideration should be placed on RNA viruses, which encompass some notoriously pathogenic with the potential to cause serious harm to human health. We also welcome the description of novel Phages given their role and applications in research. Any viral species with the propensity to spread through by micro-droplet aerosol are also given special consideration.  Any other sub-topic dealing with metagenomic and human health or animals that could be transmitted to human are welcome and will be considered for publication at this special issue of the “Metagenomics: forecasting and tracking emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases”.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Life is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue

  • Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
  • Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
  • Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
  • External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
  • e-Book format: Special Issues with more than 10 articles can be published as dedicated e-books, ensuring wide and rapid dissemination.
