Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The blockchain technology was initially introduced as a new suggestion for an alternative payment system and has gradually advanced as the most profound disruptor of traditional financial services. Beyond the hype of crypto market capitalization, blockchain applications in finance have the potential to add true value in the way financial services are offered. Global institutions have already highlighted the potential benefits of the technology, which are mainly in the area of assets tokenization, while regulators have already begun to draft rules to set level playing fields in this relatively new market. However, this particular area still remains relatively under-researched in terms of exploring the value-added benefits of the technology across all segments of the various financial services in a scientific way.

This Special Issue is devoted to exploring the disruptions that the blockchain technology and its applications bring to a wide range of financial services. We aim to publish manuscripts that explore the areas of the crypto market ecosystem, such as payments/transactions, fundraising, decentralized finance (DeFi) applications, as well as papers that seek to explore the application of technology in traditional financial services, such as in the area of asset tokenization.

The aim of the Special Issue is to shed some light on the benefits that the blockchain technology will bring to finance in our effort to better understand the potential of this technology in terms of its application to finance and financial services.

The aim of this study is to analyze and synthesize the key challenges that are prevalent in the application of blockchain in accounting and auditing, to study the approaches to account for cryptocurrencies, to study the effect of blockchain on the accounting and auditing profession, and to identify the current direction of research of blockchain in accounting and auditing, as well as identify potential avenues of future research. The research is based on 75 peer-reviewed academic studies on the topic of blockchain in accounting and auditing, followed by a descriptive and thematic analysis of the literature. Our results indicate that there is a need for more empirical studies to be carried out, which coincides with the notion of growing digitization and blockchain adoption in accounting and auditing. Based on our thematic analysis of the literature, we recommend that future research on blockchain in accounting and auditing should concentrate on the following specific areas: skills and education, governance, auditor independence, accounting standards and regulation, and the challenges faced by the accounting and auditing professions due to the adoption of blockchain technology.
