Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Underwater acoustics is a fundamental field for understanding the behavior of the marine environment and its interactions with various sound sources. This Special Issue aims to present cutting-edge research in underwater acoustics, ranging from the modeling of marine soundscapes to the latest technological innovations in underwater communication. Through this collection, we aim to explore the following key topics:
- Underwater soundscape and noise: modelling, measurements, and effects. This topic focuses on methods for modeling underwater soundscapes, including current tools and techniques for measuring underwater environmental noise and its effects on marine fauna, ecosystems, and underwater infrastructure. Both advances in the analysis of natural sounds and those caused by human activities will be highlighted.
- Communication, Positioning, and Acoustic Sensor Systems. This area will cover acoustic systems for communication and positioning in underwater environments. The topic will explore acoustic communication techniques for underwater networks, including the integration of positioning technologies such as underwater GPS and distributed acoustic sensor systems, with a focus on real-time monitoring applications and data collection in challenging, hard-to-reach areas.
- Traffic ship noises. This area will address the impact of noise from shipping, which is a growing contributor to marine acoustic pollution. Models for the propagation of such noise, its impact on marine life, and strategies to mitigate its effects on sensitive ecosystems will be discussed. Additionally, innovations in technologies for measuring and reducing noise from commercial and recreational vessels will be explored.
- Geophysics and Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) capabilities. This topic will cover the emerging applications of Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) in underwater geophysical monitoring. It will explore DAS capabilities for seismic event detection, monitoring underwater faults, and other geophysical applications, as well as advancements in integrating DAS with other acoustic technologies to achieve more accurate, real-time data collection.
This Special Issue aims to bring together articles that address these topics from different perspectives, including theoretical research, experimental studies, technological innovations, and environmental impact assessments, to advance the understanding and management of underwater acoustics in an increasingly industrialized world, with a greater focus on marine sustainability.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Journal of Marine Science and Engineering is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
