Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Marine biotoxins are naturally occurring harmful compounds, often produced by certain species of microalgae and cyanobacteria, which can form harmful algal blooms. Biotoxins can be accumulated by organisms and pose significant risks to marine ecosystems, the seafood industry, and human health through the consumption of contaminated seafood. The growing occurrence and geographical expansion of harmful algal blooms, driven by environmental and climatic changes, together with increasing global seafood trade, have reinforced the need for sensitive, reliable, and comprehensive analytical approaches for toxin detection and characterization.

Significant advances have been made in recent years in marine biotoxin research. Modern analytical techniques, particularly liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry, have greatly improved the detection, identification, and quantification of both regulated and emerging toxins. At the same time, biological assays, biosensors, and novel screening strategies continue to complement analytical methods, contributing to the development of more streamlined monitoring programmes to support food safety decisions and risk assessment.

This Special Issue aims to provide an updated overview of recent developments in this rapidly evolving field. It welcomes original research articles and reviews covering analytical method development and validation, toxin occurrence, emerging marine biotoxins, monitoring strategies, toxicological studies, and advances in detection technologies. By bringing together contributions from analytical chemists, toxicologists, marine scientists, and regulatory experts, this Special Issue seeks to promote interdisciplinary collaboration and encourage further research to enhance seafood safety and public health protection.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Journal of Marine Science and Engineering is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
