Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Atrial fibrillation, which is the most prevalent cardiac arrhythmia, poses a great burden on the healthcare system and is anticipated to increase with the ongoing population aging. Despite the multiple therapies currently available, atrial fibrillation is still associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Amid the diverse atrial fibrillation risk factors, aldosterone recently emerged as a new candidate. Following the first report of the increased prevalence of this arrhythmia in primary aldosteronism, it was recently reported that a sizable proportion of hypertensive atrial fibrillation patients are affected by primary aldosteronism. Furthermore, risk factors such as obesity and obstructive sleep apnea are associated with an increased risk of atrial fibrillation, as well as with raised aldosterone levels. In conclusion, the relationship between aldosterone and atrial fibrillation demands further investigation aimed at improving prevention, prompt diagnosis, and targeted therapy.
