Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Acute liver injury and acute kidney injury are common clinical critical syndromes, and their etiologies are complex and diverse and include drug toxicity, ischemia, infection, and sepsis. Despite the progress made in intensive and supportive care, the morbidity and mortality of these diseases remain high, constituting a heavy burden for global health.

Due to the rapid recent development of molecular biology and precision medicine, it is expected that molecular diagnosis will allow real-world early intervention through the quick identification of high-risk patients, real-time dynamic monitoring of disease conditions, and accurate classification of disease subtypes. At the same time, targeted therapeutic strategies for key molecular pathways are providing unprecedented opportunities for the development of more effective therapies with fewer side effects.

The core aim of this Special Issue is to identify and verify new molecular therapeutic targets for acute liver injury and kidney injury and explore the key signaling pathways regulating cell death (such as necroptosis and ferroptosis), inflammatory cascade, mitochondrial dysfunction, and stress response. By integrating cutting-edge omics technology (including interactomics) and mechanism research and further elucidating the impact of alternative splicing, post-translational modifications (e.g., haptenation), and protein moonlighting activities, this Special Issue will present a molecular roadmap from basic research to translational applications and ultimately explore a new path for targeted molecular intervention and individualized medical strategies for these critical syndromes.

This Special Issue will bring together cutting-edge research works in this field, focusing on, but not limited to, the following topics:

  1. The use of multi-omics technology (genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, interactomics) to screen and identify new molecular markers for early diagnosis, classification, and prognosis evaluation in acute liver/kidney injury, including those influenced by alternative splicing events and post-translational modifications;
  2. Biomarker model construction and data analysis based on bioinformatics and artificial intelligence;
  3. Preclinical studies on candidate drugs, natural compounds, or biological agents targeting the above key molecular pathways and targets, considering protein moonlighting activities;
  4. The specific role and regulatory networks of new forms of programmed cell death (such as pyroptosis, ferroptosis, and cuproptosis) in organ injury.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. International Journal of Molecular Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. There is an Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal. For details about the APC please see here. Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue

  • Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
  • Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
  • Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
  • External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
  • Reprint: MDPI Books provides the opportunity to republish successful Special Issues in book format, both online and in print.
