New Advances in Omega-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids: From Molecular Signaling to Therapeutic Applications
This special issue belongs to the section “Molecular Biology“.
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
In recent decades, the field of nutritional biochemistry has undergone a paradigm shift, redefining long-chain N-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (N-3 PUFAs)—particularly docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)—from simple structural nutrients to potent bioactive signaling molecules that can determine cell fate. While epidemiological studies have long supported the association between N-3 PUFA-rich diets and a reduced risk of chronic diseases, translating these findings into consistent clinical therapeutic strategies remains a complex challenge. In the current era of precision nutrition, it is essential to move beyond observational studies to elucidate the specific molecular mechanisms driving these pleiotropic functions.
This Special Issue, entitled “New Advances in Omega-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids: From Molecular Signaling to Therapeutic Applications”, aims to bridge the gap between molecular signaling and therapeutic application. We invite submissions that focus on deep cellular mechanisms beyond general anti-inflammatory effects. Simultaneously, we seek translational research bridging basic science with clinical practice. We encourage studies that examine N-3 PUFAs as adjuvants in stem cell research, cancer research, including chemotherapy or immunotherapy, their protective effects on the blood–brain barrier and neuroplasticity in neurological disorders, their impact on atherosclerotic plaque stability, and the remodeling of the gut microbiota via the gut–brain axis. By gathering high-quality original research and systematic reviews, this Special Issue aims to establish an interdisciplinary platform that connects molecular biologists and clinicians, ultimately advancing precise and personalized nutritional intervention strategies and preventive medicine.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. International Journal of Molecular Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. There is an Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal. For details about the APC please see here. Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
