Dear Colleagues,
Melanoma is one of most aggressive human tumors and its incidence has rapidly increased in recent years. Although highly curable when diagnosed in an early phase, melanoma is an aggressive disease when diagnosed at an advanced metastatic stage. Malignant melanoma is highly heterogeneous and substantially resistant to unselective treatments, such as chemotherapy. The identification of specific molecular targets and the evidence of microenvironment involvement in tumor genesis and progression have revolutionized the treatment of this pathology.
Targeted therapy and immunotherapy have significantly improved the life expectancy of melanoma patients by greatly increasing their overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS). Although these novel therapeutic approaches have demonstrated clinical efficacy and rapid responses, drug resistance represents a significant challenge and has yet to be overcome. This Special Issue of IJMS aims to describe the most recent pieces of evidence on targeted therapy and immunotherapy in melanoma and analyze the possible molecular mechanisms underlying drug resistance.
In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Please note that pure clinical or model studies are unsuitable for this journal, but clinical submissions with biomolecular studies are welcome. Research areas may include (but are not limited to) the following:
- New biomarkers for melanoma treatments;
- Molecular and genetic modifications associated with drug-resistance in melanoma;
- Melanoma tumor microenvironment;
- Novel therapeutic approaches in melanoma treatments;
- Omics technologies applied to melanoma (radiomic and genomic approaches).
