Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Hydrophobic–water interfaces are ubiquitous in nature. They are present in the surfaces of plants and animals that control water capture, natural phenomena such as the formation of cloud droplets, and the biological membrane cells in our bodies, where lips form bilayers that maintain cellular integrity. The chemistry and properties that occur at the boundaries between oil and water govern the stability of emulsion systems to provide long-term interfacial stability. Understanding the factors influencing their formulation is essential for controlling and preventing emulsion breakdown of industrial-based systems, including paints, coatings, cosmetics, drugs, pharmaceuticals, bitumen and emulsion explosives.

Despite recent advances in emulsion science, which have greatly improved the quality and performance of emulsion-based products using new techniques and advanced design, emulsions are very diverse in their composition, requirements, and applications and are continuously evolving and require further understanding. In addition, a move to more sustainable and greener solvents and surfactants has resulted in new problems associated with product formulation and stability that need to be addressed. In this context, this Special Issue of the International Journal of Molecular Sciences (IJMS) invites articles exploring recent advances in the creation of novel emulsion systems as well as the development, characterization, and application of novel emulsion-based systems focusing on fundamental science and industrial applications. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, contributions focused on emulgels, oleogel-based emulsions, emulsions stabilized by particle-based emulsifiers (Pickering emulsions), high-internal-phase emulsions, food and cosmetic emulsions, multiple emulsions, water-in-water and oil-in-oil emulsions, as well as novel emulsifiers. Manuscripts on recent advances in emulsion-based delivery and encapsulation approaches and related technologies are also welcome. Additionally, contributions focusing on sustainable emulsion formulation, production, and application of renewable materials, green solvents, and energy-efficient processes are encouraged.

We welcome innovative research articles, critical reviews, and short communications that highlight the latest advancements in the preparation and application of emulsion-based systems. By fostering interdisciplinary discussions, this Special Issue aims to contribute to the scientific advancement and understanding of colloidal emulsions for industrial applications.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. International Journal of Molecular Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. There is an Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal. For details about the APC please see here. Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
