Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Global population aging constitutes one of the most complex and urgent challenges for contemporary public health. Against this background, regular physical activity stands out as one of the most effective strategies for promoting the health and quality of life of older adults, directly contributing to functional capacity preservation, sarcopenia prevention, cardiovascular risk reduction, improvement in energy metabolism, and the promotion of mental health. Conversely, sedentary behavior has been shown to be a significant risk factor for a variety of adverse outcomes, including cognitive decline and frailty, as well as increased morbidity and mortality among older adults.
Recent scientific evidence has led to the international consensus that exercise-based interventions—particularly those adopting multicomponent approaches, which combine different forms of exercise—are not only effective but also safe and adaptable for older adults, including those who are physically active, sedentary, institutionalized, or hospitalized. These interventions have become an essential component for the development of public policies and health programs aimed at promoting healthy aging. Moreover, studies on the validation and reliability of the scales used to monitor and prescribe physical exercise for older adults have gained importance, providing valuable tools for safe and effective exercise practice within this age group.
In light of this, this Special Issue of the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health invites researchers to submit original articles, systematic reviews, or meta-analyses that explore the relationship between physical activity, sedentary behavior, energy metabolism, and health outcomes in older adults. Studies investigating the effectiveness of exercise-based interventions, as well as the validation of instruments for exercise prescription and monitoring health-related variables in older adults, are of particular relevance. The goal is to consolidate robust scientific evidence to support intervention strategies and public policies aimed at promoting active and healthy aging.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2500 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
