We invite researchers, practitioners, and industry experts to submit their original research and review articles for the upcoming Special Issue on “Data-Driven Intelligence: Optimizing Healthcare Operations and Systems in the Digital Era”. While digital technologies have permeated every facet of medicine, this Special Issue focuses specifically on the intersection of data analytics, system design, and operational efficiency.
Our goal is to move beyond general technology adoption and explore how clinical and operational data can be leveraged to streamline healthcare delivery and enhance system performance. We seek contributions that provide innovative insights, case studies, and empirical research highlighting how analytical frameworks and smart technologies optimize the “back-end” of healthcare to improve “front-end” patient outcomes.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- Healthcare Process Optimization: Patient flow management, operating room scheduling, and resource allocation models.
- Data Analytics and Demand Forecasting: Predicting patient arrival rates, bed capacity management, and operational risk intervention.
- Service System Design: Digital transformation of appointment systems, registration workflows, and multi-channel service design.
- Healthcare Network Planning: Hospital network layout, emergency system response design, and regional service integration.
- Quality and Safety Management: Operationalizing Lean and Six Sigma in digital environments, infection control operations, and medical error prevention through data-driven monitoring.
- Smart Infrastructure for Operations: The role of IoT and Real-Time Location Systems (RTLS) in managing hospital logistics and asset utilization.
We seek submissions that demonstrate how these targeted digital interventions enhance operational efficiency, reduce systemic waste, and ultimately redefine the sustainability of modern medical practices.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Healthcare is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
