Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
I am pleased to invite you to contribute to a Special Issue on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning in Communication Disorders: Opportunities and Challenges. Recent advancements in both Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) are transforming healthcare—specifically the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of communication disorders. In particular, AI and ML offer powerful tools for identifying and analyzing biomarkers in speech and language, namely, subtle patterns in vocal, linguistic, and acoustic features that can signal the presence, severity, or progression of communication disorders. Leveraging these biomarkers enables earlier and more precise diagnosis, more personalized therapeutic interventions, and the development of objective outcome measures, while also raising important ethical, social, and regulatory considerations.
This Special Issue aims to highlight the latest research on the use of AI and ML in communication disorders, bridging technological innovation with clinical practice. It seeks to advance understanding of how these tools can support diagnosis, therapy, and rehabilitation, while critically examining the challenges of implementation, ethical implications, and regulatory frameworks. The topic aligns with the journal’s focus on advancing knowledge in clinical and applied sciences related to human communication and healthcare technologies.
Original research articles, reviews, and other scholarly contributions are welcome. Research areas may include, but are not limited to:
- Application of AI and ML for assessment and diagnosis of speech, language, and hearing disorders;
- Language and speech biomarkers and the use of ML;
- AI- and ML-enabled therapeutic interventions and rehabilitation;
- Ethical, social, and regulatory challenges of AI or ML in communication disorders.
I look forward to receiving your contributions.
