Prof. Dr. Wei Yu Appointed Section Editor-in-Chief of Section “Cybersecurity” in Future Internet

We are pleased to announce that Prof. Dr. Wei Yu has been appointed Editor-in-Chief of the Section “Cybersecurity”. We look forward to his contributions to Future Internet (ISSN: 1999-5903).

Prof. Dr. Wei Yu is an IEEE Fellow and a Full Professor with the Department of Computer and Information Sciences, Towson University, Towson, MD, USA. He has been the PhD Program Director in Information Technology since 2023 and has been Associate Director for Research and Innovation at Towson’s AI Institute since 2026. He received his PhD degree in computer engineering from Texas A&M University, College Station, TX, USA, in 2008. His research interests include cybersecurity and privacy, cyber-physical systems/Internet of Things, and data and machine learning applications.

The following is a short Q&A with Prof. Dr. Wei Yu, who shared his vision for the journal with us, as well as his views of the research area and open access publishing:

1. Could you briefly introduce your main research areas and achievements?
My research focuses on security and artificial intelligence (AI) in cyber-physical systems and Internet of Things-enabled smart-world infrastructures that impact energy, transportation, manufacturing, and urban infrastructure. My research work has received some recognitions, including the IEEE Fellow distinction, the University System of Maryland (USM) Endowed Wilson Elkins Professorship, the USM Regents’ Faculty Award for Excellence in Research, and several best paper awards from international conferences, among others. Recently, I edited and co-authored “Edge Intelligence for Cyber-Physical Systems: Foundations and Applications”, one of the first books to provide a comprehensive roadmap for Edge AI research and education in cyber-physical systems.

2. What about the journal made you want to take the role as its Section Editor-in-Chief?
I have been involved with the Editorial Board for some time and have also organized several Special Issues, including ones on security in smart grid systems, secure big data analytics for cyber-physical systems, and others. With the dedication of the editorial team and journal staff members, I have observed the growth of the journal over the past years, both in the number of submissions and in the quality of those submissions.

3. What are your expectations and suggestions for the future development of our Section and the journal?
Security issues span many areas, including networking, computer systems, data science, and artificial intelligence (AI). In particular, recent advancements in AI pose numerous security and privacy concerns when applied across different domains. Thus, the “Cybersecurity” Section could broaden its scope, expand its Editorial Board, and address special issues in emerging fields.

4. What is your vision for the journal?
My vision is to build on the journal’s ongoing strength and increase visibility by exploring secure, efficient AI-driven smart-world systems across energy, health, transportation, and manufacturing, supported by Future Internet as a cyber-physical ecosystem—an efficient, secure, and smart network of things.

5. What does the future of this field of research look like?
Security has been a cross-cutting research area for many years. It will continue like this with new systems, new applications, and, particularly, the rapid evolution of AI research and development, which raises more challenging issues and creates even more research opportunities for the community.

6. What do you think of the development of open access in the publishing field?
Researchers use open access to quickly disseminate their results. When people from different communities access timely publications, it increases the opportunity to conduct collaborative and innovative research. With all the benefits, we will have to recognize that open access does entail higher publication fees, which could be a financial burden for some researchers.

We warmly welcome Prof. Dr. Wei Yu as the Section Editor-in-Chief of “Cybersecurity”, and we look forward to achieving many more milestones in Future Internet under his leadership.
